In “What Executives Need to Learn from the Jeff Bezos Cyber Extortion Scandal” (Risk & Insurance, 9 May 2019), Patrick Doherty, associate managing director in K2 Intelligence’s Private Client Services practice, analyzes the importance of proactively managing security for executives and other high-net-worth individuals in an evolving threat landscape, both online and in the real world. In particular, he notes, “in a high-net-worth family, you really need to protect the multi-generations, and what we call the inner circle: the personal assistant, those working for them, third parties, vendors.”
Though there are strategies for managing a security incident after the fact, Patrick explains that “[o]nce your data is out there, it is very, very difficult to ever get that back. . . . You can certainly try, if you own a copyright on photographs, to get them taken down. But they can always be hosted internationally, or on the dark web or other areas.” Engaging in comprehensive security and risk evaluations on an ongoing basis remains the best strategy to defend against vulnerabilities.
